When asked by editors and other writers, "What's your specialty?" I pause, adjust my glasses for effect, then steal a little more time before admitting, "My specialty is experiencing."
I sometimes get a, "Huh?" in response. Then I explain: Life is too short and the world far too interesting to button-hole myself--so I write about whatever captures my imagination or stirs my passion.
In that pursuit, I've scoured street markets and vendors in China looking for anything "Made in America." I've reverted to fat pants after eating creme brulee for nine nights in a row as I zigzagged Provence. And although I'm arachnophobic, I've immersed myself in the creepy world of spiders to write a children's science book.
Ultimately, it's all about the writing--the beauty of language, the poetic flow, the perfect word ... the write phrase.
In 20 years of  "experiencing" I've gained some hard-won experience. My eclectic resume includes:
  • Winner Golden Pen award
  • Page Turner Award Finalist
  • Assistant Editor, Home & Away magazine
  • Associate Editor, Minority Golf magazine (no, I'm not a minority. Nor am I a golfer!)
  • Proof reader and bible series coordinator for children's publishing company
  • Copy writing: both advertising copy and back cover copy
  • Author: 10 non-fiction books--Five for adults and five for children. More than 350 articles for national and regional magazines.
  • Member SATW and SCBWI
  • I've written about faith, family, places, people, pets, science, food and, of course, fun

Having been Shelly's editor on
multiple products—adult non-fiction,
juvenile fiction, and children's
educational books--I'm very familiar
with her skills set. Shelly writes,
communicates, and revises quickly
and well. She can shift gears
according to changing marketplace
demands. Her research is impeccable.
And she's upbeat and funny. What
more could an editor or publisher
possibly want? If you need a writer,
hire Shelly Steig. It may be the
smartest thing you've done
 in a long time.
--Robin Crouch, The Clever Factory

“I have had the good fortune to work
with Shelly a number of times in the
past eight years. She always,
without exception, turns in a well-
written, accurate story. If there is
ever a question on a detail or a need
for more copy on short notice,
she is easy to work with and quick
to respond. I can depend on Shelly
to write a story that entertains our
readers as well as pleases my
editor's heart. Can't get better
than that.”
--Karen Eakins, Home & Away

“Shelly has written about travel,
nonprofit organizations, prominent
people and businesses for magazines
I edit. Her writing is very visual,
detailed and accurate, requiring very
little editing. She takes an interesting
and creative approach to each story,
stays within word count and
submits stories on time. Shelly is a
pleasure to work with as well.”
--Kelly Anton, Denver Magazine

“Shelly has been a regular freelancer
for our magazine for several years
and I recommend her to anyone
looking for a very reliable top-
quality writer. She always produces
excellent articles, on deadline,
that require little or no additional
editing work -- and no drama, which
is always a bonus in this industry!”
--Carrie Patrick, EnCompass
